Afghan Whigs gets down and dirty
By DAVE VEITCH -- Calgary Sun

Rating: 4/5

Both Marvin Gaye and his carnal opus Let's Get It On are name-checked on the Cincinnati rock-soul group's fifth and latest album. And this, one assumes, is no co-incidence.

Throughout the new CD, frontman Greg Dulli plays the role of mysterious lover man, sweet-talkin' the ladies with lines such as "come on and taste me" and "I wanna roll with you" in a slightly menacing voice, while his band shoots its post-grunge rock through sensuous R&B, making for music that's as hot, sweaty and sticky as its subject matter. Somethin' Hot is a thrilling opener -- its tightly coiled guitar riff leading to gospel wailing and New Orleans boogie piano, while psychedelic guitar swirls, horn blasts and elegant string arrangements pop up elsewhere, giving the Whigs versatility to equal its libido.
