Petra Haden Joins The Decemberists

I know I’m stretching the Whigs related news here…but bear with me. Frequent Greg Dulli collaborator Petra Haden has joined The Decemberists. The violin-playing former member of That Dog and The Rentals has performed on the band’s new album and will be joining them as a touring member as well. WHFS to El Zol

One of the country’s last great modern rock stations disappeared yesterday. On January 12 at noon, Washington DC’s WHFS became El Zol, switching their format from new rock to salsa, meringue, and bachata. WHFS was a long-time supporter of The Afghan Whigs, and the band made several appearances at the station’s HFSfestival concerts. You can hear the last minute of WHFS in its old format (Jeff Buckley’s “Last Goodbye”) here: http://www.hfstival.com/. There’s also a petition and links to more information.

With the exception of only one record (Luna’s “Everybody’s Talkin’”), a collector has listed the entire run of the Sub Pop Singles Club, and a handful of extras, for auction at eBay. The poor seller’s server is down right now, so you can’t see all of the cover and disc scans. It’s quite a collection. You…
