Lanegan/Campbell on Times Online’s ‘08 List
The 100 best records of 2008 - Times Online
11 Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan: Sunday at Devil Dirt (V2) The only downside to this duo’s superb debut, Ballad of the Broken Seas, was the thought that such an unlikely collaboration would prove a one-off. But no: here’s another instalment of Lanegan growling and Campbell whispering through a set of songs Hank Williams would have been proud of.
Dulli’s Best of ‘08 List
From LIGHT IN THE ATTIC 2ND ANNUAL YEAR END EXTRAVAGANZA!
Greg Dulli
1. Frisky Dingo Seasons 1 and 2. Hands down the greatest cartoon of all time. If I were to answer the Proust Questionnaire query about my favorite hero of fiction; my answer would be Killface, the shallowest, deepest and most conflicted and tortured soul ever committed to whatever cartoons are committed to. I cannot adequetely describe the genius that is consistently on display every second of every episode. Adam Reed, the creator (and voice of Killface, Xander Crews, Wendell, Ronnie the Xtacle and Nearl (”Is this really Babar’s House?”), has apparently pulled a Dave Chappelle and gone on walkabout. I can only hope that he pulls it together to give us Season Three. Please God.2. Istanbul. What can I say about the most beautiful city in Europe/Asia? Have breakfast in Europe and then cross the Bosphorus for lunch in Asia Minor. It is the jam. There are mosques next door to discos and everybody smokes. Muslim extremists could learn a thing or two from their more laid back brethren. I think it was that fact and being able to smoke legally in an elevator that made me finally quit smoking cigarettes. What more had I to do as a smoker? I had reached the pinnacle.
3. Terry Callier. I not only got to see him perform for the first time in Ireland this summer, but he sat with Lanegan and I before his set and answered all our fanboy questions like a kindly uncle. Then he got up, walked to the stage and tore the motherfucker down. Terry Callier is a giant among men.
4. Tinariwen. Have loved their records for years and finally got to see them at the same Irish festival. They are mesmerizing, hypnotic, transcendent and all the things you want a band to be when you’re doing mushrooms on the side of their stage.
5. Slumdog Millionaire. You know how it’s going to end in the first ten minutes and you don’t care. You just take the ride and watch the fairy tale unfold. It’s like Great Expectations and Oliver Twist transported to modern India and it is electric.
A great film by a great director and the kids at the beginning are fucking priceless. I loved it.
Duff & Isobel Pick The Gutter Twins
Records of the year (by the people who should know)
The Independent asked a few dozen artists to name their favorite records of 2008. Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver) and Isobell Campbell chose The Gutter Twins.
Duff McKagan - Velvet Revolver
The moment I heard Saturnalia by The Gutter Twins I knew it was a classic. Master songwriters Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli have been moulding their band for a few years now and have at last produced something as cool as one might hope for. I got to see them live this past September at a festival in Spain and it was nothing short of a religious experience. There have been bigger hard-rock releases in 2008, but for sheer substance you can’t fault The Gutter Twins.
Isobel Campbell
I’m biased, but I love what The Gutter Twins do together. My favourite Saturnalia track is “Bete Noire” – it’s groovy and dark, with Mark Lanegan singing “a long dead animal is on your trail”.

Dulli on Ford Radio Thursday
Via Ford Radio
Well folks it’s the final show of 2008 this Thursday at 1pm PST, so it’s only fitting that Greg Dulli and my brother Alex will be co-hosting with me. If you have questions for Greg you can email me and please title your email ‘Question For Greg’ so I don’t miss it.
Of course we’ll be playing games and spinning some of our favorite tracks of 2008, it really was a great year for music. I’d love to hear what your top 5 songs were of 2008 in the comments, I’ll definitely be picking some of your choices to play on air.
It’s been such an amazing year, we’ll have lots to talk about on the show. Also, you should get Skype if you don’t have it so you can chat with us live on air, and we’ll need a volunteer to go head to head in a special game with Mr. Dulli.
So tune in Thursday, we can’t promise a podcast so make sure you tune in live.
Saturnalia Makes Spin’s Best of 2008
The 40 Best Albums of 2008 | Spin Magazine Online
No. 32 - The Gutter Twins Saturnalia
No big surprise that the long-awaited collaboration between ’90s-vintage gloom kings Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli wasn’t exactly the feel-good hit of the year. But the former’s narcoleptic, baritone moan and the latter’s mischievous, soulful wail give these mid-tempo dirges, awash in revelations and Revelation, a touch of grace that recalls their classic work without repeating it. The most upbeat moment: the synthy “Idle Hands,” in which the word suffer pops up only four times. S.K
