Saturnalia - RTÉ.ie Entertainment

RTÉ.ie Entertainment: The Gutter Twins - Saturnalia
They’ve been teasing fans with their collaborations since The Twilight Singers’ ‘Blackberry Belle’ in 2003 and now, after what seems like forever, grunge’s two great survivors Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan satisfy every desire with the colossal ‘Saturnalia’.

Longtime masters of sun-goes-down music, the duo have created one of those very rare albums that would make you happy to see shorter days. For either man each of these 12 journeys to the dark end of the street warrants a place on a Best Of and the atmosphere of love, lust and religious references they lure you into is so addictive that you’d scour the Internet for the outakes, the unfinished and the cast-offs.

There are rockers (’God’s Children’, ‘Idle Children’), ballads (’I Was in Love with You’, ‘The Body’) and dirges (’All Misery/Flowers’, ‘Bete Noire’), stunning duets (’Front Street’, ‘Who Will Lead Us’) and a guitar solo so maniacal that any metal overlord would be thrilled to call it theirs. And with every listen grows the feeling that this is far too great to be a one-off.

One of the best reasons to remember 2008.

Afterhours Wins CMJ Sonicbids Spotlight

CMJ News Story

Afterhours are the winners of this week’s CMJ Sonicbids spotlight competition. The Italian band, which has been making music since 1989, is set to release their eighth album, I Milanesi Ammazzano Il Sabato, today on Universal.

Over the course of their nineteen-year career, the band has shared the stage with R.E.M., played as the backing band for the Gutter Twins’ (Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan) first live show, and founded the Tora! Tora! festival, a traveling alternative music festival in Italy.

The group gained attention almost immediately after the release of their first album, All The Good Children Go To Hell, when Italy’s leading alternative music magazine, Mucchio Selvaggio, named it one of the best albums of the eighties. The Italian six-piece went on to record variously in Italian and English, and to tour extensively, continuously selling out shows in Italy.

Their latest effort, which is preceded by two DVD anthologies released by Virgin, sees them collaborating with Greg Dulli, Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes), and John Parish, who also co-produced the album.

The Scotsman Talks Devil Dirt

The Scotsman interviews Isobel Campbell about her second album with Mark Lanegan, Sunday at Devil Dirt.

Now the pair have locked horns again on the assured follow-up Sunday At Devil Dirt, which is altogether more grimy and sultry than their more innocent, plaintive first date. Campbell takes more of a back seat vocally this time round, but she has still captured their innate chemistry, even though the notoriously taciturn Lanegan can be an inscrutable workmate.

“He’ll be jolly one day and then he’ll go back to being quieter than ever and it’s as if you’re not even there. I try not to take it personally but it’s not always easy. For me, it’s actually quite masochistic. Sometimes you want to put a whoopee cushion on his chair or blow a big raspberry at him – which I actually do sometimes!”

So why work with him again? “I suppose I’m just a sucker for a good voice,” she admits. “He brings a lot of my writing to life and I’ll do anything for my songs. It’s never been easy, but I hated touring when he wasn’t there. Because I do actually love singing with him, it’s a total honour. When we’re on stage, it’s totally the right thing.
