Great Susan Marshall Interview

There’s a fantastic article/interview with Susan Marshall up at: Memphis Commercial Appeal

They give a great overview of her career and some hints at the direction of her new solo album, due later this year.

Susan Marshall with Lucinda Williams Tonight!

Susan Marshall will be sitting in with Lucinda Williams at her Memphis tour stop tonight. I’ve heard great things about Williams’ latest record and heard several raves about the current tour. Sounds like a sure thing.

Susan will also be performing April 30 at the Stax Museum for Last Mondays in Studio A.

Win a Date with Gwen

If you’re not listening to the Scott Ford Show, can I remind you that you’re missing out?

A killer set of TV Theme Song Trivia was a highlight of last week, but their current contest is sure to raise the ratings (and some eyebrows). Scott is offering a chance to Win a Date with Gwen, his sister in law. Gwen is a bathing suit model. This is a fantastic idea.

As a happily married man, I’m out of the running - but if you live in (or can get to) LA, give it a shot. Having a SK reader win would be a treat.

The Scott Ford Radio Show airs Thursdays from 1-4PM Pacific.

Whigs at Great American Ball Park

If you’ve been to a Cincinnati Reds game this year, there’s a good chance you heard a familiar song over the PA. Not just “Centerfield” but maybe a little “Debonair” or “Gentlemen.” Great American Ball Park apparently has a very cool sound guy. You may even get some PJ Harvey if you ask nice.

Rick McCollum Solo Gig Tonight

Moon Maan’s Rick McCollum will be performing solo tonight at 400 Bar in Minneapolis. I’m told to expect the unexpected.

Gutter Twins in Disturbia

disturbia

Thanks to eagle-eye David for catching a Gutter Twins photo in the movie Disturbia, the number one film of last week.

Here’s David’s note:

There is a very brief nod to the Gutter Twins in Shia LaBeouf’s bedroom. There is a poster above his desk promoting Sam Holden and on the poster is a picture of Dulli and Lannegan in a booth with cocktails.

Holden also mentions the plug on his site.

Jeff Klein Dates

Solo artist, Twilight Singer and all around good guy Jeff Klein opens a string of shows tonight in Cleveland. He’ll be accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson of Polyphonic Spree. The NY and NJ shows will be full band including Catherine Popper (Ryan Adams and the Cardinals) on bass and jazz great T. Xiques on drums.

Apr 17 Grog Shop Cleveland, Ohio
Apr 18 The Fire Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Apr 20 Maxwells Hoboken, New Jersey
Apr 23 Mercury Lounge New York, New York
Apr 25 Mercy Lounge Nashville

Also, a new track (with Dave Rosser) on JK’s Myspace site.

For all Greg Dulli’s earnestness and thorough self-deprecation, maybe he and the Afghan Whigs just showed up to the post-punk, soul-tinted party a little early. Beyond the nervy-edged guitar riffage of “Retarded” and Dulli’s muted, growly vocal, there isn’t a whole lot on this retrospective to suggest that the Whigs couldn’t just appear in 2007 and be hugely popular. The big-guitar and piano combination on “What Jail Is Like” and Dulli’s unmistakable presence as a singer rekindle the listener’s desire that the Whigs get solidly beyond niche-level acceptance. Dulli’s astringent lyrics are centrally important throughout the band’s oeuvre and stand out here (witness the heartfelt vocal tug of “Be Sweet” get countered by the famous “I got a dick for a brain” line). The Whigs are believably radio-ready–especially after so many male singer/songwriters have confessed to so much on the FM dial. As for this 18-song collection, fans will quibble over song selections. What they’ll agree on is that the two new tracks, “I’m a Soldier” and “Magazine,” both slow(er) and groovy, could make great strides for a new Whigs’ era–which is apparently unlikely, given Dulli’s commitment to the Twilight Singers. –Andrew Bartlett

Of course, Scott plays music from The Twilight Singers, his friends, and music he’s digging at the moment. Yesterday’s highlight was a cover of “Tomorrow” from Annie performed by Jeff Klein. Hear a bit of it for yourself:
