Powder Burns Makes AL.com’s best of ‘06
3. Twilight Singers - “Powder Burns” Hurricane Katrina’s destruction in New Orleans led Greg Dulli to record his most powerfully emotional collection of songs since The Afghan Whigs’ “Gentlemen.” This is the stuff of pure rock and roll.

3.The Twilight Singers
Powder Burns + A Stitch In Time (EP)
Is it cheating to consider these two separate recordings one entry?Probably, but this is one band that intertwines its music so well, there’s no of ignoring one for the other.
“Powder Burns” features some of the most varied and honest compositions ever from lead Twilight Kid Greg Dulli. As the singer told Rock Music Menu in May, this was the first record he’s done sober, which, though unfortunate, often results in boring records from the freshly clean.Instead, he’s dealt impassioned tales of addiction’s death grip, requited love, and emotional contradictions are delivered in nearly perfect bursts.
“Bonnie Brae” sets off an ominous beat that builds into soaring cry of realized personal freedom, echoed again in the bass lead brilliance of “Dead to Rights.”
The ever revolving rogue’s galleries of singers are on board for the disc, including Ani DiFranco and Joseph Arthur, the latter who also joins Dulli on “A Stitch In Time.”The EP is no less intense than its long player companion, with a cover of the latest Massive Attack song, “Live With Me,” and a haunting “The Lure Would Prove Too Much” as bookends.
Three of the five tracks are duets, notably a pair of them with grunge pioneer Mark Lanegan, who has since become a full-time member of the band.Next up is a full length duets record between him and Dulli, under the moniker The Gutter Twins, which could very well end up on the 2007 edition of this list.

The Staggering Statistics, “All of This and More”: The Staggering Statistics power trio, featuring former Afghan Whigs bassist John Curley along with vocalist/songwriter Austin Brown and Joe Klug (drums), has honed a solid neo-grunge sound, rich in texture. It’s modern, yet with plenty of classic rock flashbacks, feedback and usually in-your-face sonic guitar.

Oregon Live’s 2 Best of ‘06
The Twilight Singers’ Powder Burns makes an appearance at #2 on the Oregon Live Blog 2 Best of ‘06 list. There are several Whigs references sprinkled throughout the article, mostly in regards to The Hold Steady:
It’s the E-Street Band circa 1974 meets Social Distortion. Wait, your Afghan Wigs [sic] were E-Street meets Social D, so this must be the new Wigs. Or whatever. I like it. I almost get it.

November 13, 2006 - Twilight Singers
Theatre of Living Arts
Philadelphia, PA, USA
In art and music, getting the ideal mood and ambiance is incredibly important. Once the equipment had been set up and sound checked, the cigarettes, drinks and towels brought out, set lists taped down, the incense and candelabra lit, things were almost ready. And as fans raised their half empty plastic cups and cheered loudly, it was clear the mood was just right for the Twilight Singers.
Former Afghan Whig Greg Dulli and his band of merry musicians seemed refreshed and genuinely thrilled to be playing, even after being a month into this, the second leg of their tour supporting Powder Burns. Setting things in motion with the twinkling piano led Teenage Wristband and strong driving rhythm of Im Ready, the Twilight Singers captivated fans with their music.
Taking a moment to flirt with a woman in the front row, Dulli was in full control of the show and the audience. Bassist Scott Ford remained turned half away from the audience all night while drummer Bobby MacIntyre continually whacked away at his kit and guitar player Dave Rosser took center stage with several solos. Mixing things up once last time, Dulli and keyboardist Jeff Klein who also opened the show with his one man band setup swapped instruments towards the end of the set adding to the already intimate feeling of the show.
The ever elusive Mark Lanegan took to the stage twice with the band. Eyes shut tightly throughout his performance, Lanegan flowed cleanly from Massive Attacks Live With Me into Where Did You Sleep Last Night? before singing Ill Take Care Of You and then turning things up a notch with the rocking Sideways In Reverse. During the encore, he ventured out once more for Boogie Boogie and Flashback.
Live and in person, the Twilight Singers bring a special excitement and energy that has so many dimensions and depth that a recording simply can not capture it. The bands experience and passion are the driving forces behind their music and that is what makes it all worthwhile. The Twilight Singers pull no punches and offer no cheap gimmicks. After all, this is rock n roll.

The Skinny
The Twilight Singers @ Oran Mor, 21 Nov
Written by Gareth K Vile
Bar-room keyboards tinkle in the softer moments, the band are by turns reflective and aggressive
The Twilight Singers are a post-grunge super group - led by Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs and featuring a guest appearance from Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan - and their music is nostalgic without being out-dated. As their set tonight wears on, Dulli recalls the frantic rage of post-punk and the classic Americana of the late 1960s while avoiding cynicism or self-parody. Cover versions litter the set, from Leadbelly’s mournful tales of infidelity through to the Band’s ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,’ but it is the two guitar assault that forces attention. Bar-room keyboards tinkle in the softer moments, the band are by turns reflective and aggressive: Lanegan’s brief slot gives his distinctive voice free reign. This is a remarkably tight and intense show. While much of the New Country that passes for American rock today is merely self-conscious and trite, The Twilight Singers are atmospheric and passionate, acknowledging the past and recasting it with vitality.
