The nearest grunge came to glamour was Kurt Cobain’s baggy cardigans, with the furious tossing of long, lank hair passing for stage-craft for the likes of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. But nestling amongst the nihilism and drug-induced stroppiness of the Seattle scene stood the debonair leader of the Afghan Whigs, Greg Dulli.

Dulli was as much Rat-Pack raconteur as Generation-X rocker. Cigarette in hand, he’d opine, charm and entertain, his old-fashioned showbiz contrasting with the modern darkness of his songs. Nearly two decades on, and after releasing four albums under the guise of the Twilight Singers, Dulli remains the consummate showman. “I’m on my knees for you!” he shrieks, proffering himself to the crowd and turning his music’s seedy introspection into spectacle. His taste for unexpected covers, made apparent on the wonderful She Loves You album in 2004, remains too. There’s snippets of Amazing Grace, Echo and the Bunnymen’s The Killing Moon - turned blisteringly raw by Dulli’s sandpaper vocals - and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

The arrival of fellow grunge survivor Mark Lanegan throws Dulli’s exuberance into sharp relief. The duo are making an album, and Lanegan is now an official member of the Twilight Singers. On Live With Me from the band’s recent Stitch in Time EP, Lanegan’s rich voice is perfection, his stillness and intensity startling. His murderous passion on Where Did You Sleep Last Night? survives Gulli’s attempt to make his stoical friend crack a smile by standing at his shoulder and staring at him, and Lanegan’s role as the straight guy to Dulli’s all-round entertainer looks assured.

SPIN.com: Greg Dulli, Freaking Flicks, and Silly Hats

I had the opportunity to see Greg Dulli and his band at Brooklyn’s Warsaw last week, and it served as an excellent reminder of two things. The first is that once I turn 30, I’m officially banning myself from rock clubs, because there is rarely anything more embarrassing than an old guy at a show. The second, though, is more important: Dulli is my favorite musician of all time. You can keep your Dylans and Bowies and Dursts — I’ll take Dulli’s brash, ballsy croon and sexual grind. Whether with Afghan Whigs, the Twilight Singers, or on his own, he has never let me down. The show was excellent — Dulli absolutely killed the best tracks from the Singers’ fantastic new album Powder Burns, and also whipped out a bunch of excellent covers: Leadbelly’s “In the Pines” (featuring Mark Lanegan on vocals), Echo and the Bunnymen’s “Killing Moon,” and in an homage to Brooklyn, TV On the Radio’s “Wolf Like Me.” Bonus Dulli moment: During the set, some guy threw some ice at the stage, and Dulli asked “Why would you throw ice at me, motherfucker? Somebody hit that guy!”

Article by Charles McGarry

This EP winds 2006 up nicely for the Twilight Singers. Following almost unanimous applause for their latest LP, the band encored by playing relentlessly for the second half of the year. Unsurprisingly, by the time they made it to Cabaret Voltaire with Mark Lanegan in tow over the summer they may have looked a bit knackered, but their show was nevertheless sublime. Featuring one Twilights track and four weighty collaborations with players such as the aforementioned Lanegan, Joseph Arthur and estranged longterm songwriting partner Rick McCollum, A Stitch in Time is substantial testimony to the fact that Twilight Singers specialise in providing drowsy narcoleptic acid jazz and straight up euphoric adrenaline shots to the heart – there is no in between. Blazing Hendrix riffs shroud the McCollum collaboration in the beauty of classic Whigs flavour, while the slow burning metronomic perfection of Massive Attack cover ‘Live With Me’ and the spacious groove of ‘Flashback’ respectively punch home the most intense and soothing vocal deliveries that Lanegan has committed to tape for some time. Almost aptly, last track, ‘The Lure Would Prove Too Much’ is the only dwindling, unfocused ditty to detract from this otherwise outstanding package.
