AH on Daily Times List

Amber Headlights made The Daily Times list of 2005’s best releases from “bands you may not be too familiar with”.

Greg Dulli - “Amber Headlights”

From his days as the Afghan Whigs leader through the more recent incarnations of the Twilight Singers, Greg Dulli remains one of the more consistent songwriters on the scene.

This short, nine-song set bristles with brilliance. From the slow burn opening of “Domani” to the slick paced and cranked up “Cigarettes,” this is the most logical transitional piece between the singer’s previous outfits.

Listen to the exposed and stripped down “Get the Wheel.” Clocking in at less than two minutes, this little gem will convince you of the soulful urgency Mr. Dulli possesses, and why he is one of the only true voices of this troubled generation.

Twilight Singers Live DVD

One Little Indian will release a Twilight Singers concert DVD on January 31st. It’s listed at Amazon.com - but currently not available for pre-order.

Twilight Singers - Twilight Live [Amazon]

Update - Thanks to Don for pointing out that Amazon has this item listed as an Audio CD. However, OLI describes it as “Bootleg DVD” on their upcoming releases list.

Update 2 - thx Rocko

The Twilight DVD will be avalible at Barnes & Noble. It will be $13.58 online at bn.com or for home delivery from the store - it will be $16.99 if purchased at the store. It is now avalible for preorder either way. If enough orders are made in a few different stores the DVD will become “modeled,” that is every Barnes and Noble will carry it, thus increasing sales potential.

The UPC for the DVD is: 827954052295

nearLY, Now Available

nearLY, the band fronted by former Nine Inch Nails drummer Jerome Dillon, released their long awaited debut album “reminder” yesterday.

The album features a collaboration with Greg Dulli on a cover of the Afghan Whigs track “Step Into the Light.”

Update: Just purchased “Step Into the Light” at iTunes. It’s presented as a duet between Claudia Sarne and Greg Dulli. The female-sung lead verse immediately flips the song on its head - just as Marcy Mays did when singing “My Curse.” Beautiful.

Ramblin’ Man

Gutter Twin Mark Lanegan’s new EP with Isobel Campbell is now available. Titled “Ramblin’ Man” (after the included Hank Williams cover), this four track EP is a prelude to their forthcoming full release, ” Ballad of the Broken Seas.” It’s available now at Amazon for $4.99. [Link]

From Spin.com

The four-song release offers a bittersweet mix of country and indie rock. The tracks “Come Walk With Me” and “St. James Infirmary” are gentle, dusty lullabies, while “Revolver Pt. 2″ drapes the Glaswegian songbird’s haunting pipes over a pedal steel guitar. Meanwhile, the duo gives a modern take on wanderlust in the title track, a 1955 Hank Williams tune. Cracking whips back Lanegan’s growls and Campbell’s sultry coos in the weary cowboy dirge.

Bands that should give it another shot:

The Afghan Whigs. Greg Dulli is doing just fine as The Twilight Singers, but every time he pulls out an old jam, there’s a sparkle that suggests a Whigs reunion would be righteous.

Plain Recordings has released The Twilight Singers’ Blackberry Belle on vinyl. I’m not sure how widespread availability is, but one of our UK readers picked up a copy this week. The white vinyl gatefold LP includes the bonus track “Run Rabbit Run.”
