Lanegan Sings for the Kids

Gutter Twin Mark Lanegan appears on Dog Train a new album of children’s songs written by Sandra Boynton.

From Blogcritics.org

The good news is that Mark Lanegan, if he weren’t covered in some pretty odd tattoos, could probably moonlight singing kids’ songs. His voice is warm and light, his tone is wry but not overdone, and the song (as, I believe all of them were, written by Sandra Boynton) is charming. It’s a bluesy tale of a bear and his sneakers–an addictive song with a funny punch line.”

The album also features songs from Spin Doctors, Alison Krauss and Weird Al Yankovic.

Dillon Covers Whigs?

From Jerome Dillon’s recent Thenitmustbetrue.com interview:

Also, my friend Greg Dulli had expressed interest in wanting to be involved in the record [-- nearLY]. So I picked an old Afghan Whigs song that I was a fan of, one of his songs. We ended up redoing that as a cover and I tried to turn it into a torch song without it sounding like “Endless Love”. You know, a terrible duet between two people that are shitting on each other musically.

Update from Jeromedillon.net:

The debut record from Jerome’s solo-project, [nearLY : reminder], will be released by KUFALA recordings/LA COSA NOSTRA records online and in independent retail stores on December 20th.

You can preorder at kufala.com.

The Whigs track covered is “Step Into the Light.”

Mays Opens Surly Girl Saloon

Surly Logo

Marcy Mays (Scrawl/”My Curse” vocalist) will be opening the Surly Girl Saloon in Columbus, OH. The live music venue and bar will have a distinct look and attitude.

When Marcy Mays was her partner’s age she was touring the world in her band Scrawl. This matriarch of Columbus-based grunge rock has pledged that the backroom will have “more black, skulls and flames” than the front of the restaurant, and it will become a space to develop talent that doesn’t draw large crowds.

“I was looking for a place where you could have music, not just having it all about the money-making thing … someplace to take chances,” said Mays. “If a band can’t draw 150 people, there are no options [for bigger clubs to make a profit].”

Jeff Klein Interview at PopMatters

PopMatters Music Interview | Bewitched by a Dark Muse

Excerpt:

The Hustler was recorded over an about a month’s time in New Orleans on a suggestion from Dulli, an idea Klein is definitely thankful for. “Dulli said that this is where you need to make this record, and I took his word on it and he was right — New Orleans is so entrancing, so dark and evil, it’s great. There is so much culture and definitely a more respected history and so much decadence. People selling drugs, prostitutes, churches and porn shops — it was just a mix of everything, religion, voodoo and jazz. So much heritage, it’s hard to not just feel it”.

Gutter Twins Cover Story

There’s a GUTTER TWINS cover story in this month’s ROCKERILLA magazine. Any of our Italian friends care to pick one up and translate?
