Keynote Recap 2
More from Dulli’s MidPoint 2005 keynote via Enquirer.com
Most quotable musician: Artist keynote speaker Greg Dulli - a hero on the local scene and in the indie rock world - refused to mince words when he addressed MidPoint attendees on Friday.
Dulli on his early days with influential local band the Afghan Whigs:
“Coming from Cincinnati, you had to work harder … you had to try harder, you had to believe in yourself more.”
On the Cincinnati-area music scene: “When we were coming up, it was clique city.”
On being at ground zero during the early-’90s alternative-rock movement: “It was electric. It felt like a revolution, and it kinda was.”
Keynote Recap
News of Greg Dulli’s keynote address at the MidPoint Music Festival excerpted from the Cincinnati Post
“You don’t need a major label and they sure don’t need you,” said Light, delivering the event’s state-of-the-industry keynote.
The notion was seconded by another tri-state native Friday, Greg Dulli, once a member of the Afghan Whigs, a now defunct band that helped put the area on the national alternative music map in the mid-’90s.
Dulli, a native of Ross, Ohio, passionately urged musicians to stay true to their own beat during a panel discussion Friday.
“You have to believe in what you are saying in your music,” Dulli said. “Doors will slam, rooms will be empty. Calls will be unanswered. That can’t matter to you.”
Dulli, who now calls Los Angeles home, has earned a cult reputation as a producer and songwriter working his independently produced Twilight Singers Project. He was a last-minute addition to MidPoint after Hurricane Katrina scuttled his plans to begin work on an album this month in New Orleans.
Dulli recounted horror stories of major label deals the Whigs signed in the ’90s. He cautioned that although signed bands might get large, up-front advances, record labels usually charge back to artists everything from gas and bus rentals to hotels rooms and meals.
“Unless you are pushing three million albums, you are going to owe someone,” Dulli said.

Dulli to Give Keynote at MidPoint Music Festival
Official Press Release:
The MidPoint Music Festival announced today that its 2005 Artist Keynote will be recording artist, Greg Dulli.
Dulli has been called ‘one of rock’s finest lyricists,’ and has undeniably made some of the most critically applauded music of the last 10 years, first as songwriter and front man for the Afghan Whigs, and now with his rotating Soul/Rock/Hop collective, The Twilight Singers.
Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, the Whigs were the first band outside of the Northwest to be signed to influential independent SubPop, before moving on to stints with major labels Elektra and Columbia. Releasing seven albums before disbanding in 2001, the band’s album “Gentleman” is considered one of the finest releases of the alternative era and still appears on critics’ top ten lists.
In between, Dulli has directed music videos, appeared in the films “Monument Avenue” and “Beautiful Girls” - his first foray into soundtrack supervision, and even voiced John Lennon, singing the late Beatle’s parts in the Stu Sutcliffe biopic, Backbeat.
Dulli’s third album of original material with the Twilight Singers entitled Powder Burns is slated for a February 2006 release. This September, Dulli released his first solo offering, Amber Headlights, on his own Infernal Recordings imprint.
He resides in Los Angeles, California.
Dulli has requested that an honorarium usually reserved for the artist keynote instead go to The Jazz Foundation, an organization that promotes cultural and educational activities that build awareness of the music and of the musicians that make it, as well as the Jazz Musicians’ Emergency Fund (JMEF) - a fund that assists struggling jazz artists, many of whom are getting older or sick, with medical, financial, and career development needs.
The artist keynote takes place in the Black Box Theatre of the Contemporary Arts Center on Friday, September 23rd at 4pm during the two day conference. Dulli will be joined by 2005 Industry Keynote, Alan Light, for a lively and entertaining discussion. Both Dulli and Light are former Cincinnatians.
Only in its fourth year, the Festival and Music Industry Conference is considered one of the most important proving grounds for independent artists rising through the industry ranks. Past keynote participants have included Art Alexakis (Everclear), Jody Stephens (Big Star), and Pat Dinizio of the Smithereens.

John Curley, former bass player for the Afghan Whigs will also be a panelist at the festival on the topic “Getting the Most Out of Your Production Budget.”
