Afterhours Successes

afterhours roma

The new album from Italian rockers afterhours, “ballate per piccole iena”, entered the Italian national charts at number two today. “Ballate” was produced by Greg Dulli.

The tour, of which Signore Dulli has been a part of the last few weeks, has been drawing large crowds, including the 8,000 fans pictured above in Rome.

If you’ve had any success importing “Ballate” in the US, let me know.

→ Thanks to Jason for pointing out CDEurope and GEMM, both of whom have “Ballate” and ship to the US.

Updated:
A final show to the spring tour was added for Sunday, May 1. The show will be at a nationally televised music festival in Rome called Primo Maggio, held in Piazza San Giovanni. It historically attracts 300,000-500,000 people. Afterhours will perform at 10PM.

The Other Steve Earle

You may be asking yourself - what’s original Afghan Whigs drummer Steve Earle up to these days? So, you run a Google search and find out all about Steve Earle the outlaw country artist. If you’re happy to stop here, may I recommend Jerusalem.

Out of the blue, you might get an email telling you what former Whig Earle is doing - making music. The email might have a link attached to it. The link might have four of Steve’s new songs for you to listen to. The songs may be described as “Powerpop.”

Recommended: Return to Sin City - A Tribute to Gram Parsons

susan-parsons tribute

dvdThanks to the wonder that is High Definition television, I caught “Return to Sin City - A Tribute to Gram Parsons” on INHD2 last week. It’s a celebration of the music of the late Gram Parsons, one of the forefathers of what we now (ruefully) call alt-country. You probably know Parsons best by his songs, performed with The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, and solo. Songs like “She”, “Ooh Las Vegas” and “Hickory Wind.”

For the most part, “Sin City” is a typical tribute concert, albeit with some big names. Keith Richards, Norah Jones, and Steve Earle perform to name only a few. But, it’s former Afghan Whigs vocalist Susan Marshall that steals the night. As a background singer, she can be seen throughout the show. But, when she steps behind the mic for her solo turn, it’s a special moment. If you remember her stirring renditions of “My Curse” during the 1965 tour, you will not be disappointed to hear her set “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” on fire. She also soars on “In My Hour of Darkness” with the House of Blues Gospel Choir.

If you aren’t able to catch the show’s run in INHD2, it’s also available on DVD. Susan’s performance, as well as those of Jim Lauderdale and Steve Earle, make it worth the price of admission.

What Might Have Been

Thanks to Bea for coming across this Twilight era interview with Greg Dulli, a worthy read, especially for the following tidbit:

What’s the next Whigs record gonna be like?
It’s pretty schizophrenic right now. I think my experience with Fila has opened my eyes to the world of beat-driven music. At the same time I’m a very song-oriented person. I’ve been listening to a lot of blues lately, so there’s a decidedly bluesy, delta-esque feel to a lot of the material. The one thing about the Whigs is that we’ve constantly reinvented ourselves each record. No record is the same, and this one will be most definitely different than ‘65. I think they’re all reactions to the previous one.

It’s pretty early in the game — I’ve only got about eight songs right now. I won’t go into a studio unless I have 20 or 22. We had a great session last night. We went from five in the evening until five in the morning, and we got onto something pretty interesting and special, something I’ve never heard us do before. I think having a hot keyboard player in our group has really shifted the dynamic, and we’re sort of a five-man band now. For the last three records we’ve had [a keyboard player], but now I want to have one always. It’s a great extra texture. We can all play remedial keyboards, but none of us are gonna win any boogie-woogie piano contests. Last night was a Clavinet exercise. Stevie Wonder popularized [the Clavinet] — it’s the instrument on “Superstition.” You play it almost like you play the drums. It really keeps the tension — and very funky. That’s been the instrument of the week.
