Henry Butler Opens in NOLA

henrybutler.jpgFamed bluesman Henry Butler will open for the Twilight Singers at Tipitina’s in New Orleans on November 20th.

While opening acts for the tour are still being scheduled for dates around the country, it’s no suprise that former Afghan Whigs leader Greg Dulli would choose Butler to open for his new band on this stop. During the Afghan Whigs’ 1965 tour Dulli would often espouse the virtues of Butler and fellow swampland piano players like James Booker while onstage. Butler joined the Afghan Whigs at the Howlin’ Wolf in New Orleans for their 1997 Thanksgiving show. Portions of that show were released as the Live at Howlin’ Wolf promo EP.

In the press materials for the Twilight Singers’ Twilight as Played by album, Dulli said:
“I love New Orleans. It’s one of the greatest cities on the planet. Music is going on constantly. In fact, I wrote ‘King Only’ when I went to see Henry Butler play over at the Funky Butt on Rampart Street.”

Expect a rollicking good time at this show, with a possible encore jam with Butler and the band.

Telegraph Dulli Interview

The Telegraph has published a great interview with Greg Dulli (archived here).

Of special note to those seeing the Twilight Singers on tour:
… while for the most part Dulli will be performing songs off his new album, he says he’s not sure that audiences have seen the last of the Afghan Whigs back catalogue.

“I’ll tell you what, it probably has not been retired, because the current members of the Twilight Singers touring band will not let it die. Every time I walk into the rehearsal room, they’ve got another number worked out. And I’m like: ‘Jesus Christ!’”

In other news:
Blackberry Belle received 4.5 “balls” (what kind of a rating system is that?) from Drowned in Sound.
