Former Afghan Whigs Leader Buys L.A. Bar
Greg Dulli has gone from bandleader to barkeep. The brooding vocalist has begun his post-Afghan Whigs life by purchasing the Short Stop bar near downtown Los Angeles. Dulli is the most publicly recognized name in a large group of entertainment-inclined investors who purchased the Sunset Boulevard dive under the name Vowel State Hospitality Inc. late last year.

Compared with the much-ballyhooed recent demises of the Smashing Pumpkins and Rage Against the Machine (who say they will carry on despite losing their lead singer) the unexpected break-up of Cincinnati’s Afghan Whigs this week will barely register a blip on the rock screen. However, after fourteen years and six albums, the Whigs were more than just a footnote in the annals of the Nineties alternative scene.

The Afghan Whigs take their final bow.
After 14 years and 6 albums, The Afghan Whigs have disbanded. Singer/songwriter Greg Dulli says that the geographical distance, which for so long kept the band fresh, began to work against them. Dulli lives in Los Angeles, bassist John Curley and drummer Michael Horrigan in Cincinnati and guitarist Rick McCollum in Minneapolis. The band remain friends and, apart from the often cruel and unsentimental banter between members, still plan to call each other on holidays. Of the four, only Dulli has announced his intention to continue making records. He is currently recording the follow up to his debut album, twilight as played by the twilight singers. In a joint statement, the band says: “It was a blast. we’d like to thank everyone who took the ride with us and let us ride with them.”
