Greg Dulli has been singing his ass off for years now, but never more so than on others’ material–his performance of Barry White’s “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe” with The Afghan Whigs remains a career high-water mark. So it’s natural to give in to high expectations surrounding Dulli’s latest delivery, the all-covers She Loves You; as it turns out, it’s his most stirring music since the Whigs’ Black Love. Dulli’s work always seems as if it’s been recorded in some aural equivalent of CinemaScope, and here with his post-Whigs outfit The Twilight Singers, the notoriously brash vocalist injects Bjork’s “Hyperballad” and Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love” with his patented grandiose sound. Elsewhere, the band reinvents “A Love Supreme” as an oozy slow jam intro to Marvin Gaye’s “Please Stay (Once You Go Away)” one moment, then knocks Fleetwood Mac’s “What Makes You Think You’re the One” clear out of the park the next.

Smoothest cuts: “What Makes You Think You’re the One”; “Please Stay (Once You Go Away)”; “Real Love”
