Just picked up Blackberry Belle at lunch. Gorgeous! Already hooked on the intoxicating grooves. My local independent music store only got two copies and they were tucked down low on the new release rack. Where’s the love for a true visionary?

  2. Melissa says:

I also picked it up on my lunch hour today. It’s absolutely amazing (as I suspected). Went to two differnt stores before I found the lone copy at the local Borders.

Got the cd today. It’s great.Best Buy does carry it!

  4. Mark says:

Went to three stores today looking for it. Borders, Best Buy and an indie shop. None of them had it. Best Buy didn’t even have it in the computer. Borders computer said it was in stock, but it wasn’t. And the indie shop told me that it was released on the 10th (yeah right!) and that they didn’t have it. So frustrating!!!

  5. Clayton says:

I got my copy today at a great indie store called City Lights in State College, Pa. They held a copy for me but they had 3 or 4 other copies in-stock. As for the album, the stretch of songs from Decatur Street to Feathers is just amazing. The whole thing is great, but I had already listened to Teenage Wristband, The Killer, and the version of Fat City from Muggs album to death before I got to hear the rest of the album. It’s definitely more diverse than “Twilight”, which is awesome. Papillon is my favorite right now, but I’m sure it will change the more I listen.

  6. Marcos says:

Is The album out in Europe (Spain) today?

  7. kurt says:

is it me or is the mix extremely muddy? there is so much layering that i’m a little disappointed that i can’t really gear it. the vocals seem to be below everything else. otherwise a masterpiece.

  8. Clyde says:

Kurt — I agree with you. I realize that these fan forums don’t often support any negative criticism, but I have felt that way for a long time now, especially with tracks like “Teenage Wristband” — for a song that is so obviously mean to sing along with, it’s difficult to do just that.

  9. Jay says:

    Kurt & Clyde-
I think muddy might be the wrong adjective. “Wall of sound” might be a more appropriate discription of the style that GD has long used in his recordings. This, of course, comes from his affinity for motown. Dulli has always created songs with many layers. I think it adds to the mood.

  10. Clyde says:

Hi Jay — thanks for keeping this discussion going. I’m a big fan of the layers, as well as the “wall of sound” (spector) — I think that this is handled extremely well on tracks like Esta Noche, St. Gregory, etc., but there something that is not quite right with “Teenage Wristband” — the vocals seem buried on such a great track.

  11. Bill Buckerfield says:

Bought the CD today, bought my tickets to the Cleveland show (Grog Shop) yesterday. The tracks are real nice. Listening to it the second time through. Bought it at a Best Buy of all places. Only two on the shelf.

  12. Steve says:

Paid about 30 bucks for Blackberry Belle. Got it today. Ordered it from Amazon.com and got it overnighted one day shipping and you’re goddamned right it was worth it. I’ve been waiting so long for this and I love it. I’ll be checking them out on 11/23 at the Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas for 12 bucks. Can you beat that! Soooo looking forward to it.

  13. Jay says:

    Clyde-
While these songs are genius and near perfect…I do agree that some things could have been done differently in the mix. However, I tend to enjoy the nuances of GD’s vocals when competing with instrumentation. Teenage Wristband is not the first time he has “buried” his vocals.
    =)

  14. David says:

Went to 7 music stores in minneapolis before i could find it at cheapo records which only had two in stock. just pathetic. i went to all the indie stores, borders, cd warehouse. such a shame. all that other new crap they had.
i must say that the first lesten didn’t register fully since i have been so immersed in the vibe of twilight, but man, after a couple more listens, this cd is just so megatight. who new vibe, mood, sound. dulli is the man.

  15. David says:

i must agree with kurt and clyde. i though there was something wrong with my speakers when i first gave it a listen. and particularly with ‘teanage wristband’. There’s so much amazing things going on, that its a shame it seems there is something a little off in the mix. at times it sounds like it could be a conscious aesthetic choice, as it does in a way contribute to the overall mood and in the way it just teases you with subtleties that get nearly lost, or drowned out, but i think ‘teanage wristband’, and maybe ‘st. gregory’, and even ‘esta noche’ would flatout rule if there was just a little more clarity or adjustment to the mix. I don’t see how this can be a result of what Jay is calling a ‘wall of sound’. I can’t turn it up as loud as i would like without this becoming more obvious.
this criticism is just a little production comment about what really is a dulli masterpiece. otherwise really really diggin this joint, and suprised to see dulli do something quite different so well.

  16. carson says:

blackberry belle doesn’t disappoint on any level in my opinion. there isn’t a track on it that i don’t enjoy. i’m crossing my fingers that the guys make it to florida at some point so i can hear how it all translates live. we stock the record at my store here so i get to play it a couple times a day and turn people on to it, which is nice. i hope it does well for the band, they deserve it

  17. NW says:

Note: “Wristband” is the only track that was mixed by George Drakoulias and I agree the vocals are buried a little too much in the mix –especially since it’s “the single.” Since it is “the single,” Dulli probably wanted a seasoned pro like Drakoulias to mix. Obviously, the entire album is amazing and I think the other mixes are fine. I think it should have been caught during mastering. Shows what the big money does for you!

Just went in search of Blackberry Belle and, of course, couldn’t find it in any store in the entire city. Ordered it off Overstock for 12 bucks minus the 5 dollar coupon for a grand total of 9 bucks with shipping. Can’t wait to hear it, have heard bites off Amazon and others, and this just reaffirms the reason why people are hitting the Kazaa’s of the world to find great music. I was in the mood for it tonight and I guess “Black Love” and “as played by” will have to get me through the night.

GD reinvents hisself again. Wonderful cd, but in a negative way, I must agree with some of the above. Listening to Teenage Wristband on my laptop, I loved it, great song. But the crispness is not there on the cd. Too much bass and noise. It isn’t just burying the vocals. The vocals are buried on Son of a Morning Star, but that still sounds great. Teenage Wristband on the cd is too muffled. It’s weird, but I prefer listening to that song on my laptop speakers over a stereo. Not complaining about BB in the least, though.

  21. Christophe says:

There isn’t a single copy of BB to find in my city (Antwerp)even though every store I went to has ordered it.
I’m getting really impatient because I’ve been waiting for this record since may.
Does anyone know who is responsible for BB’s distribution in Belgium?

  22. ayco says:

Zomba distributes the cd in Belgium.

Blackberry Belle has finally hit the shelves in Antwerp.
So far I have only been able to listen to the first five tracks + the new version of Fat City (wow man, just listen to those drums).
So far I’m really, reeaaly enjoying this one.
I’ve seen The Afghan Whigs twice (1998 & 1999) in the past and they were one of the best live-bands I’ve ever seen.
I hope The Twilight Singers find their way to Belgium when/if they tour through Europe.
