Saturnalia – Montreal Gazette
From doombound opener The Stations through to Front Street, this tag-team between two alt-rock dramatists – Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli – finally consummate their long collaborative flirtation. They’re a band now, and how. Moody, moonless and muscular, this is a Gimme Shelter for ’08, an extended wrestle with some kind of damnation. Given the darkness and the lavish biblical imagery, we’ll call it Gothspel, with Dulli’s reckless voice (mainly within discipline) and Lanegan’s grave growl surprisingly well-matched. There are many shades of crimson brooding, yet having written that, Saturnalia is not imploded – rather, anthemic in its way, and ultimately cathartic. Lovely in more moments than expected, scary where expected, and convincingly dark. And just in time for March.
