buy the afghan whigs in spades

Order The Afghan Whigs'
New Album: In Spades – I Miss You Already

Barring something exceptional happening in the next two weeks, we will silence our broadcasts on Friday, September 15th.

Sometimes no matter how hard you try and how special the thing you do, it simply isn’t enough to beat the odds. It’s the cold reality of business that not even we could escape. When September 15th comes, we’ll meet it proudly with heads held high and celebrate the past two years of and the spirit of 97X.

A standout station, friend of The Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers, Staggering Statistics and countless others (not to mention a Cincinnati institution), will be shutting down after a honorable attempt at being listener-financed. I wish Barb and the whole team all the best as they move forward to new opportunities. Be sure to listen up over the next two weeks and participate in the farewell party. will be missed.

Sad business, this. Since WOXY was (EASILY) the best radio station I’ve ever listened to, it will be difficult to find even a reasonable substitute.

  2. Now that the tour has wrapped, what are the chances of the Whigs making a quick appearance in the WOXY Lounge for one last hurrah? I know for a fact that if the guys wanted to do it, all they have to do is show up with instruments in hand. Please, have one of them contact woxy and try to make it happen.

I am so very saddened that WOXY is going away. Its music has been an important part of my life for 20 years. I have always been astounded by the freshness, energy and passion that has come through those speakers. WOXY is consistently intriguing, challenging, intelligent and a lot of dance fun. How is it that I can love practically every tune the first time I hear it? I can only imagine the mountain of music that the staff sorts through to find high quality tunes and then present it so smoothly. Their dedication is obvious which makes this seemingly eminent ending even more difficult.

Of course music is more than just a product. It transcends race, social class and even language and time. When I listen to it with somebody, especially live, I feel a bond that special experiences are capable of instilling. It says that we were there in that space and time and it was memorable. Memorable because the artist did something unique, compelling, creative and interesting. I believe that WOXY had the same reverence for music and that it was shared with its audience, not just played for us.

I suppose that most listeners are initially drawn to WOXY since it is so unique compared to other media which overplay their pabulum to the point of insanity. WOXY provided a refuge from the commercial exploitation and instead played music because it was so damn good that it had to be played. In other words, it played adult music.

I lived in Cincinnati until 1997 when I moved to the State of Washington. I was so glad when I could listen again via the internet for the last four or five years and of course began subscribing from the first week it was offered. Of the current crew, I admired Shiv’s depth of knowledge, Barb’s sunniness and enthusiasm and Mike’s smooth delivery. Nobody will ever do it better.
