Soundtrack: New Orleans
While the many musical tributes to New Orleans in the months immediately after the storm tended to focus on the city’s widely recognized musical heritage, “Powder Burns” is instead a meditation on loss and disaster. Dulli said he continues to find meaning in the songs as he plays them on tour, including a stop Saturday at the Cat’s Cradle.
“I had to capture it for me personally,” he said. “It’s not rife with hurricane imagery. It’s certainly not literal. I’m still figuring out what I said.”
Although “Powder Burns” is in a certain way a New Orleans album, recorded in and about the city, it has little relation to the jazz sound the city is known for.
“I don’t make New Orleans-sounding music; I make music in New Orleans,” he said.
