Powder Burns – The Brownsville Herald
The Brownsville Herald – Online Edition
Greg Dulli wrote and sang scorching soul-influenced rock songs about love’s dark side as the frontman for the 90’s alternative rock band the Afghan Whigs. Dulli’s fourth album under the Twilight Singers name, a vanity project he created before the Whigs disbanded in 1998, is his most vivid and melodic work in years. On “Powder Burns,” Dulli uses his smoke-damaged lounge singer pipes and electric guitars, piano and strings to craft moody, intimate love songs for wounded and hardened hearts. These twelve, mid-tempo tracks are bittersweet and sometimes melodramatic, but Dulli makes it all work, adding earned romantic flourishes and hard luck, but hope-filled lyrics throughout.
