Powder Burns – What’s On London

3 Stars – Trevor Baker
When talking about Greg Dulli the work ‘soul’ gets thrown around much more often than with most soul singers. In the Afghan Whigs you always got the impression that he’d have much preferred to be Marvin Gaye than roll about howling and screaming. On this, his fourth album as the Twilight Singers, though, there’s often a battle going on between his soul and rock sides. At times it comes together as a perfect synthesis, as on “I’m Ready” which sounds like a punk rock Four Tops but Greg has the kind of voice which suggests somebody who’s lived a bit. It’s at its best when exposed on the delicate country track “The Conversation” or the brooding intro to the title track. At times, though, as on “Bonnie Brae” and “Forty Dollars” the soul and the passion gets buried under some ugly rock noise and you’d wish he’d have a little more faith in himself.
