Powder Burns – Uncut
4 Stars – Adam Sweeting
Afghan Whigs frontman remains on the wild side.
Greg Dulli describes this new collection of material as “extremely autobiographical”, not least the gruelling drug-dealer saga of “Forty Dollars”, and there’s no escaping the nagging sense of search and struggle seething through these 12 tracks. The disc was party recorded amid the hurricane wreckage of New Orleans and the physical choas seems to have found a musical echo in the snarling steel-foundry rock of “My Time (Has Come)” or the disturbingly ominous “Bonnie Brae.” Dulli takes the odd breather, such as the acoustic-with-strings number “The Conversation”, but mostly the mood is dark. Kinda seductive, too.
