Powder Burns – Rocksound

7/10 – Trevor Baker
June 2006 Edition

When talking about Greg Dulli the word ‘soul’ gets thrown about much more often than it does with most rock singers. In The Afghan Whigs you always got the impression he’d have much preferred to be Marvin Gaye than spaz about howling and screaming. On this, his fourth album as The Twilight Singers, though, there’s a battle going on between his soul and the rock sides. At times it comes together as a perfect synthesis, as on “I’m Ready” which sounds like a punk rock Four Tops. At others, as on “Bonnie Brae” and “Forty Dollars”, the soul gets buried under ugly rock noise. And, every now and then, as with the gospel “Candy Cane Crawl”, he shows what a powerful soul singer he can still be.
