Amber Headlights – Metro (UK)

4/5 Stars

Originally put on hold following the death of his close friend, the film director Ted Demme in 2002, Amber Headlights collects songs recorded after the 2001 demise of Greg Dulli’s soul-grunge hoodlums The Afghan Whigs and before the gospel-hued Twilight SIngers project became his day job. That it should be a document of a man in transition is appropriate: this black-hearted hombre has always excelled at escaping (usually himself) and at seeking redemption. From the dense breakneck recklessness of Cigarettes through the stomach-churning violence of Early Today, Amber Headlights is a
gothic road movie where every scene packs such a wallop it’s hard to find your way back home.
